Eddie Chee Yazzie Sr.
He grew up out in the deserts of Arizona, herding sheep for his family. Up until the age of 10, he had never seen a white man, only Navajo's. He was taught by his father, the ceremonies, prayers and songs of our people. I grew up listening to him always singing and always praying.
From him, I learned, I was a Sacred Spiritual Being and all of the Creator creations were for me. I was taught the importance of my existence, that it did not just happen. I was here for a sacred purpose and I was to walk in Harmony with the Deities of my people.
Bessie Janice Yazzie
Bessie Janice Yazzie, my mother was very gifted and had so many artistic skills. She taught me how to do all my crafts, sewing, bead work, cooking, weaving, pottery, doll making, tanning deer hides, basket weaving, and so many other skills. She also took every opportunity to help me learn about my Native American Indian traditions, stories and medicinal uses of herbs as well as teaching me the plant useage for food. She always told me, "You are from the five fingered people and I have taught you all that I know, to beautify the world and survive on all the Gifts from Mother Earth, Father Sky and our Great Creator.: Therefore, I should never be on the government welfare programs. I have given you all this so that you can walk with pride and honor being able to provide for yourself and your family."
